It is our honour to invite you to participate in the 1st International Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference in the Master of Social Sciences series entitled The World at a Crossroads after the War in Ukraine. Diagnoses and prognoses from the social sciences perspective, organised by the Interfaculty Department of Critical Realism of the Academy of Applied Sciences TWP in Szczecin.

The conference will be held on 5-6 October 2023 in a hybrid format – on site in the ANS TWP building in Szczecin at 15 Monte Cassino Street and on-line via the MS Teams platform. There will be an opportunity to ask questions via chat for the on-line participants.

The conference is interdisciplinary and its main purpose is an attempt to show the social, economic and cultural transformations that have taken place and are still taking place under the influence of the war in Ukraine seen from the perspective of social sciences in the broadest sense. The conference will be a space in which we will try to identify and present preliminary diagnoses of the current situation, but at the same time will open up a space for discussion on possible prognoses and potential solutions regarding the ways of understanding and functioning of people in various areas of life after the war in Ukraine. During the scheduled meetings, we will become acquainted with the perspective of eminent professors from Ukraine on these issues. Special lectures will be presented by Prof. Dmytro Shevchuk (National University Ostrogothic Academy), prof. Iryna Chudovska (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv) and prof. Jurij Szczerbak (National Unversity of Western Ukraine).

During the conference speeches, special attention will also be paid to considering these issues from the perspective of critical realism. Master lectures will be presented by Prof. Douglas Porpora (Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA), Prof. Paul Dembinski (University of Fribourg, Switzerland) and Prof. Pavol Dancak (University of Presov, Slovakia). The event was held under the patronage of The International Association of Critical Realism.

The Scientific Conference Committee: Prof. Waldemar Urbanik (Academy of Applied Sciences TWP in Szczecin), Prof. Krzysztof Wielecki, (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw), Prof. Marek Rembierz, (University of Silesia), Prof. Wiesław Gumuła, (Jagiellonian University), Joanna Smoluk-Stachowska, PhD (Academy of Applied Sciences TWP in Szczecin).

The conference is planned in the form of plenary and thematic sessions in the following fields: sociology, pedagogy, psychology, philosophy, economics, cultural anthropology, cultural studies. An exhibition of posters is also planned.

Researchers from all fields whose research interests fall within the conference theme are cordialy invited to deliver papers and present posters. We especially warmly invite young academics, doctoral students, students as well as practitioners, who are interested in the broad themes of the conference. We hope that the wide range of topics determined by the conference title will allow you to choose from a wide range of interesting topics. It is also possible to publish selected post-conference papers in the form of articles in the scientific journal Polish Journal of Critical Realism.

We also welcome the presence, as passive participants, of students and doctoral students as well as all those wishing to deepen their knowledge of sociology, critical realism, and human functioning in the contemporary world in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Participation in the conference is free of charge. The number of on-site places is limited.

Approx. time of the speeches – 20-25 min. Authors of accepted papers and posters will be informed after 15.08.2023r.
